Mahavidya Practice Sheet
07. Goddess Dhumavati
The Smoky Goddess (Cosmic Dissolution, Non-Duality & Radical Detachment)
🔸 Core Bija Seed Mantra
DhÅ«m (धूं)
- Phonetic Mechanics: Pronounced by starting with the heavy, voiced aspirate "Dh" sound, extending into a deep, long "ū" vowel, and dissolving into the resonant nasal anusvara "ṃ".
- Esoteric Function: Known as the seed of obscuration, cosmic smoke, and ultimate shield. *Dhūm* generates a heavy acoustic layer that darkens and dissolves superficial attachments, filtering out the illusions of the material world to expose the absolute, unconditioned reality underneath.
🔸 Ritual Mudras (The Hand Positions)
Shoonya Mudra & Chin Mudra
- Shoonya Mudra (Void): Press the tip of the middle finger firmly against the base of the thumb. Gently press the thumb down over the middle finger, while keeping the remaining three fingers straight.
- Chin Mudra (Consciousness): Alternatively, touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb, forming a circle, while extending the other three fingers out flat.
Somatic Alignment: Shoonya Mudra reduces the space element within the energetic body, serving as a direct gateway into the vast, primordial Void. It anchors the practitioner in quiet stillness, mirroring Dhumavati's state of profound, silent space.
🔸 Primary Attributes & Iconography
- The Winnowing Basket (Surpa): She carries a large wicker winnowing basket, symbolizing the crucial process of sorting chaff from grain. It represents separating cosmic illusion (*Maya*) from the eternal, unchanging truth (*Satya*).
- The Horseless Chariot & Crow: She sits upon a broken, motionless chariot adorned with a crow banner. The crow represents the ultimate destroyer of time, dark wisdom, and the ability to find hidden value in things others discard.
- The Widowed Form: Depicted as an old, tall, and gaunt ascetic woman wearing unadorned, smoky clothes. Lacking a husband, she represents absolute independence from worldly systems, demonstrating the freedom found in complete self-reliance.
